Part-time Controller

Our client, a local non-profit organization that has seen considerable growth with the addition of many new services and programs, is seeking a Part-time Controller for a permanent position in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Reporting to the Executive Director, the successful candidate will provide oversight to ensure a high standard of internal controls within the charitable organization. The approximate hours required are 40 hours per month and the opportunity to work remotely with occasional in-person meetings with executive.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Review documentation for donor funding to ensure conditions are met
  • Establish policies and procedures to ensure segregation of duties for critical accounting procedures
  • Bank reconciliation review on a quarterly basis
  • Investment account statement review to ensure accurate recording of income and donations
  • Review internal controls for payroll and payroll records
  • Internal quarterly financial statement review
  • Review payroll records and controls
  • Assist in the creation of an audit binder to accumulate all supporting documents for financial statements
  • Prepare annual financial statements for the Association’s external auditor in accordance with GAAP for not-for-profit agencies

Requirements: 

  • Post-secondary education in business or accounting is required
  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation completed or in progress is preferred
  • Minimum 5 – 7 years’ experience in a senior accounting position
  • Accounting experience in the not-for-profit sector is an asset
  • Strong working knowledge of accounting software and computer applications including Microsoft Excel & Word
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Superior attention to detail and accuracy
  • Adaptable and flexible work approach
